Famed Apple analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo is by far the most trusted source of Apple leaks and information, and today, he has come out with a new research note, obtained by MacRumors, where he mentions the future of the iPhone and when we can expect Apple to finally make the switch to 5G enabled smartphones. Back when Apple was still planning on using Intel modems in its iPhones, it was rumored that the 2020 iPhones will be the first to get 5G support. However, since then, the company has switched its modem provider to Qualcomm — for which they had to settle a long patent dispute with the American chipmaker, and pay at least $4.5 billion — and will not be using Intel modems. In fact, Intel even closed down its 5G development plans following the news. According to Kuo’s note, the development of the 5G iPhone is right on schedule, and we’ll see Apple announce them in 2020. The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has granted commercial 5G licenses to four of the country’s telecom operators — China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, and Broadcasting Network Corp. With this step, the country has taken a big leap forward towards full commercial deployment of 5G networks in the country. Back in 2018, China had given licenses to three of the country’s state-owned telecom operators, but those were just for trialling 5G services in the country; the new licenses will allow the operators to deploy 5G networks commercially, and at scale. MIIT minister, Miao Wei said at the license presentation ceremony that the 5G technology will bring high-speed, safe, mobile, and new-generation information infrastructure in the country. Chinese giant Huawei has signed a deal with Russian telecom operator MTS to develop a 5G network in the country over the course of the next year. The deal was signed on the sidelines of a meeting between the presidents of the two countries, Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin. Speaking about the deal, MTS said in a statement that the partnership will see  “the development of 5G technologies and the pilot launch of fifth-generation networks in 2019-2020.”  Also quoted in the statement was Huawei’s Guo Ping, who said that he was very happy with the agreement in an area of strategic importance like 5G. The agreement between Huawei and MTS comes at a good time for Huawei, considering the US imposed ban on the company has been causing it quite a lot of trouble in the global market with various US technology giants ceasing business dealings with the company.   Samsung Electronics Co. is making a new push in the market for wireless network infrastructure. This time, the South Korean electronics giant’s timing may be just right. Mounting concerns in Europe and elsewhere about letting China’s ZTE Corp. and  Huawei Technologies Co . provide vital components for fifth-generation cellular networks have coincided with Samsung’s ambition to capture 20% of the global market by 2020.
