Reddit CEO Says Banning Hate Speech Is Really Difficult

Social media platforms have connected the world, but they have also brought pain in the form of random strangers hurling abuses and harassing others. While Twitter and Facebook have taken a clear stance on what qualifies as hate speech – even though there are controversies on that front every now and then – Reddit’s approach is quite passive, and its CEO, Steve Huffman, just confirmed that. In a leaked private message conversation with a Reddit user, Huffman argued that  ‘hate speech is difficult to define’ , and that it is not the job of a private company to regulate and control what users can say on its platform. Even though Reddit rocked a very basic UI for well over a decade, it built a cult following and has driven influential discussions around key issues on the internet, along with those dank memes of course. But, Reddit is  now rolling out  a refreshing new redesign, which falls more in line with modern standards, and what young internet users expect from social networks such as Reddit. With this fresh new look, it’s no longer the scary old Reddit, but a lot more welcoming for those who stumble in or for new users. A redesign was long overdue and Reddit has  decluttered its platform by introducing more fluid and user-friendly elements .
