Android Oreo Update to Bring LDAC Codec Support to Xiaomi Devices

Image
Reports in the Chinese online media seem to suggest that Xiaomi is rolling out LDAC support to all its smartphones that are running Android Oreo beta. The new feature will also be available on the stable versions when that finally rolls out.  A multitude of Xiaomi devices  are expected to get Android Oreo-based MIUI 10  in the days ahead , so all those devices will likely have native LDAC support sooner rather than later. LDAC  is an audio codec developed by Sony, and allows Hi-Res audio streaming (24bit/96khz) over Bluetooth connections up to 990 kbit/s.  Starting with Android 8.0 Oreo, LDAC was incorporated into AOSP, enabling every OEM to integrate it into their Android devices without any royalty payments. The technology uses Bluetooth connectivity, but is said to be significantly more efficient than the standard Bluetooth codec. Mi 8 Series Sells over 1 Million Devices in Just 18 Days

Image
I know I’ve used the statement “Xiaomi recently launched…” a lot, but then again, that is due to the fact that Xiaomi actually does launch a lot of products at quite a rapid pace. Despite that, the company still manages to find success for its devices. The Chinese giant had recently launched the Mi 8 series of smartphones, consisting of the flagship Mi 8, accompanied by the Mi 8 Explorer Edtion and lastly, the Mi 8 SE, which is the world’s first smartphone to ship with Qualcomm’s latest processor, the  Snapdragon 710 . While the devices did look great on paper, it seems like they have been selling pretty well too. View image on Twitter Donovan Sung ✔ @donovansung Sharing some amazing news. May 31 is guaranteed to be a big day for Xiaomi. At its press event in Shenzhen, the company is  expected to unveil  a number of products, including the Mi Band 3, MIUI 10, and of course, its latest flagship smartphone, the  Xiaomi Mi 8 . Now, however, reports indicate that the company may also introduce a premium mid-range handset named Mi 8 SE that will apparently be the first device to sport the  recently announced  Snapdragon 710 SoC. An image, said to be of the Mi 8 SE retail box, was posted  on Weibo  recently, seemingly revealing some of the key hardware specs of the upcoming smartphone, including the aforementioned info about its processor. The image further reveals that the device will have either 4GB or 6GB of RAM, an AI-powered dual-camera setup at the back and a 20MP camera on the front. Earlier rumors have claimed that the device will be offered in three storage options – 64GB, 128GB and 256GB. While it will, very likely, spor...

Google’s ARCore for Android Reaches China Through Xiaomi’s App Store

Image
Google has been exploring ways of widening its reach in China ever since its most popular and widely-used product, Google Search, was blocked in the country. The company has invested in a number of Chinese startups, including a $120 million investment in  Chushou  – an online esports platform which allows users to broadcast their mobile gameplay live for others to watch. Earlier this year in February, when Google officially launched its augmented reality SDK, the company  announced a partnership  with Xiaomi, Huawei and Samsung to release smartphones with ARCore support in the Chinese markets. Since a majority of Google’s products are banned in China due to the censorship, the company had to partner with OEMs who have their own dedicated app stores that can push the ARCore app to Android users in the country.
