Google and the White House budget office are among the organisations that are seeking reprieve from ban on doing business with Chinese technology company Huawei, according to media reports. Google has asked to be exempted from any ban on Huawei, warning the Donald Trump administration that it would risk compromising US national security if it went ahead with export restrictions on Huawei, according to a report in Financial Times. Google executives worry that  the ban would force Huawei to develop its own version of Android and the “hybrid version” of Android could pose security risks , according to the report. The US imposed ban on Huawei might have put the company in turmoil in the global market, but the company is definitely not giving up. After announcing that it has its  own operating system in the works , and with reports coming in that  major Chinese companies are already testing it out , Huawei has reportedly asked US carrier Verizon to pay licensing fees to the company. According to a report in The Wall Street Journal ( paywall ), and The  New York Times , the Chinese giant sent a letter to Verizon back in March this year, asking the company to pay licensing fees for networking equipment it uses, and accused the company of infringing on over 238 of its patents. Verizon doesn’t directly use Huawei equipment, but reportedly depends on 20 vendors that use Huawei technologies, and the Chinese company’s patent claim in this regard covers properties like network devices and wireless technology. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will consult with the Home Ministry and the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) before taking a final call on allowing Chinese telecom major Huawei to take part in the upcoming 5G spectrum-based field trials, an official source said here. “It is a security issue not a telecom or technology one, Home Ministry will have to be in the loop and also the PMO whose views are very crucial on matters relating security of the system or country,” the official said. “The call on such a decision will have to be with detailing and due consultation. We will also have to see worldwide how the issue has been handled by the governments wherever Huawei is operating. It’s a larger call than just a equipment supply,” he added. The government has constituted a committee headed by the Principal Scientific Advisor, to decide on Huawei’s participation in the 5G trials. Chinese giant Huawei has signed a deal with Russian telecom operator MTS to develop a 5G network in the country over the course of the next year. The deal was signed on the sidelines of a meeting between the presidents of the two countries, Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin. Speaking about the deal, MTS said in a statement that the partnership will see  “the development of 5G technologies and the pilot launch of fifth-generation networks in 2019-2020.”  Also quoted in the statement was Huawei’s Guo Ping, who said that he was very happy with the agreement in an area of strategic importance like 5G. The agreement between Huawei and MTS comes at a good time for Huawei, considering the US imposed ban on the company has been causing it quite a lot of trouble in the global market with various US technology giants ceasing business dealings with the company. Despite recent rumours about  Huawei  looking to pause  production  of its smartphones, the company has just announced the launch date for a new phone. According to a new invite, the Huawei Maimang 8 will be unveiled at an event in China on June 5th, pegging the launch just a couple of days from today. Looks like the reports were wrong, and Huawei will continue to launch new products. The Huawei Maimang 8 will be a mid-range smartphone and the successor of the Maimang 7. It could be sold as the Huawei Mate 30 Lite in other parts of the world. To announce the launch date for the new phone, Huawei has released three posters highlighting key features of the phone. The posters, thus, have revealed the specifications of the device as well. As per the first poster, the Maimang 8 smartphone will come with a 6.21-inch display with slim bezels and a teardrop notch. The US ban on Huawei has been a wild-ride so far, but things seem to be getting crazier by the day. After earlier  revoking Huawei’s Android license , and then  removing the Huawei Mate 20 Pro  from its official list of devices that can run the Android Q beta, Google seems to have had a change of mind, and has added the  Mate 20 Pro  back to the list of devices that can run the Android Q beta. The change is live on the Android Q beta  website , and you can go see it for yourself. The Mate 20 Pro joins back the likes of the Essential Phone, the ZenFone 5Z, Nokia 8.1, LG G8, and others. It’s unclear whether this change is due to the 90 day reprieve that the US gave Huawei on its ban, or whether the Chinese giant and the US have worked out a deal but haven’t made any announcements yet.
